Follicular unit excision (FUE)

What is an FUE Hair Transplant?

An FUE hair transplant is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that is virtually painless and leaves no linear scar. The hair follicles are removed from the donor site (usually the back of the head), then transplanted hair-by-hair to the thinning or bald area. The result is 100% natural, undetectable and permanent. Dr. James Harris is a pioneer of the FUE and patented inventor of FUE technology currently used around the world. 

FUE stands for Follicular Unit Excision, a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive hair transplant method for obtaining follicular units from the donor area one-by-one using the ARTAS™ Robot or the Harris S.A.F.E. System, invented and patented by Dr. James Harris of Hair Sciences of Colorado, and currently in use around the globe. Because the amount of skin tissue obtained to extract a single follicular unit is very small, the procedure is minimally invasive and virtually undetectable. For a given number of grafts the amount of skin tissue removed during FUE is approximately 35-45% less than the amount of skin removed with a strip harvest of the same number of grafts.

What is No-Shave FUE?

In no-shave follicular unit excision only the donor follicle hairs are trimmed, all other hair remains the same length. The trimmed donor follicles are therefore hidden amidst the remaining full-length hair, and a completely normal appearance post-transplant is achieved. Suitable for both men and women, this technique makes both the process and eventual outcome of a hair transplant undetectable. FUE Technique

When using the Harris S.A.F.E. System the follicular unit to be removed is selected by the surgeon, the punch is then placed over the follicular unit and inserted into the skin to separate the unit’s hair shafts from the surrounding tissue. Next, the unit is grasped and extracted from the surrounding skin.

When the ARTAS™ Robot is used to perform FUE the dissection parameters are input into the system, a device is placed on the donor area to identify the excision area, and the ARTAS™ System then proceeds to perform graft dissections under the doctor’s supervision. While we’ve achieved great results with other methods of FUE graft implantation, the most recent information shows that we can enhance the survival rates of follicular grafts by using this specialized device.

FUE grafts are typically more delicate than grafts harvested by the strip method because they usually have less fat surrounding and protecting the follicles. FUE grafts more vulnerable to drying out and being damaged during the traditional implantation method.

With implanters, the grafts are encased in a sleeve, which protects the follicles as they are positioned at the recipient site. The device allows us to implant the graft without the follicles ever being touched.
